The Light Overcomes the Darkness

As I sit here in the doorway of a building here in Honduras, I stare into the distance and see the flickering lights of the pueblo in the distance. While my eyes view the Honduran landscape, my mind constantly goes back to the current news stories back home. Possible war, racial divide, and bigotry cover the headlines yet again. This grieves my heart. Not only is the country I am fond of once again faced with challenges it seems cannot be overcome, but more importantly the evidences of depravity have shown themselves to be ever so ugly and aggressive.
The problem will not be fixed by a law or program. The problem will not be fixed by this person or that person speaking out. The problem will not even be fixed by the two sides agreeing to meet and discuss their differences.
Don't let the media, politicians, or your everyday Facebook opinion fool you; we are not fighting with each other. For Christians, we know "we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places" (Eph 6:12).
The darkness we see in the evil of white supremacism, authoritarian tyrants, and the like will never be wiped out by a bomb or congressional act, for others like them will rise again. The only thing in this world that can and will destroy the darkness we see is the Light we have, so let's shine that Light into an ever-darkening world.
Grace and Peace,
Jeffrey McDonald
